Truly Valuable Nutritionals

June 24, 2020 by Miss

SupplementPillAmericas quest for health in a pill basically fails dismally most of the time. The majority of the time I ignore this type fad like activity and just at least attempt to consume a mostly healthy diet. Mostly wholefood, not too much sugar and processed foods, and bubbles – you get the idea.

When a dear friend was enthusiastically telling me all about some medically supported supplements I was not that believing . However she told me her diet was the worst ever – which is why she supplemented with these amazing nutritionals.

Those of you with an amazing diet shouldn’t really feel any need to take them. But if your day to day food intake is just awful (tell the truth), you maybe you should think about it.

Should Men Ever Wear Sandals?

September 10, 2015 by Miss

Sandals. Basically every woman owns at least one pair (usually many more than 1!), but only some men wear them regularly’.  So the question is: are sandals appropriate for men or not?

We will discuss both sides of the story…

Einstein_in_Sandals

They are manly: Would you question the manliness of the Roman warriors back during the days of the Roman Empire Such as the extraordinarily manly  Praetorian. Guards? It would not be a good idea.

These warriors were some of the best soldiers of their time. What did they wear on their feet? Sandals. Sandals are practical for keeping feet cool in the Italian heat and is a timeless style that predates boots.

Feminine: It may be true that some manly boys have done sandals in the past, there’s something truly effeminate about showing off your feet.  There’s no need for them. This is not advice that  you should to go all Nixon-on-the-beach, but at the bare minimum limit the sandal use. Going to the beach – use flip flops. But the world doesn’t need to see your nasty man feet.

Create Your Unique Style

August 2, 2015 by Miss

So you hope you’ve made it. You have a date with a man that doesn’t spend his off time in the bottom of a beer bottle or shout “Wooooooo!!” when one of his buddies arrives.  You’re on the path to being a big girl.

Now is the perfect occasion to take a long  hard and truly critical look at your wardrobe racks. Most girls do have a classic go-to date outfit, this guys hopefully not the kind that will stick around a girl that dresses like the homeless.

The issue is, we don’t always have a classically driven fashionista to follow.  So we follow the trends of our friends. Not always a wise decision.

The problem with this issue of focus we have when it comes to clothing is: Dressing appropriately is close in importance to impressing a cultured man as education and knowing what to order while out.

Poor and Positive Fashion Role Models

Have you seen how they style those silly looking models in fashion magazines? High style clothing the average girl could never get away with, or can pay for, and layers upon layer of  accessories and clothing that is way inappropriate  for the majority of social situations.

The concept here is to use what you see as ideas and customize them to your taste. Take away the ridiculous and keep whatever works for you.

Mirror A Celebrity

Many of the glitterati have a way more natural style. (movie star, not rock star.)  For the men – the ever handsome Clooney always looks good whether he’s at a premier or just out grabbing a bite. You can also search Google images or visit celebrity blogs to get an idea of how top celebrities dress.

Stay with Big Brands

There’s another way to keeping it stylish – find a brand you love, that fits your everyday, and stay with it. When it comes to high quality clothing big brands, there’s a ton of selection available. Lately, preppy brands are back, with a “dash” of California or West Coast style (aka, West Coast Prep), that could also really help a girl that wants to dress well but still wants to keep a sense of laid-back, Cali  style. You can impress without trying too hard.

Getting it all Together

It’s not really all that tough to dress well, with simple style. The trick  is to have a specific look, borrowed from your favorite movie star or inspired from magazines, make it feel real for you, and wear the hell out of it. It’s all about how YOU feel about it.

Why Do Men Actually Exist? The Scientific Rationale

July 22, 2015 by Miss

Men’s existence has long confused some scientists. Sexual reproduction is kind of inefficient and the vast bulk of species use this method for reproduction. Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UAE) believe they may have figured it out, theorizing that the process of sexual selection improves the health and ultimately protects a species from the threat of extinction.sperm

The recent study was published in the well respected journal Nature and examined Tribolium flour beetles to figure out why multicellular organisms use physical sex to reproduce. Researchers looked at many generations of these beetles and examined the role of sexual selection in outcomes. Sexual selection is the system where the males compete with each other to reproduce and the females select which male to reproduce with.

Almost all multicellular species on earth reproduce using sex, but its existence isn’t easy to explain because sex carries big burdens, the most obvious of which is that only half of your offspring—daughters—will actually produce offspring. Why should any species waste all that effort on sons? We wanted to understand how Darwinian selection can allow this widespread and seemingly wasteful reproductive system to persist, when a system where all individuals produce offspring without sex—as in all-female asexual populations—would be a far more effective route to reproduce greater numbers of offspring.

The research determined that when sexual selection was removed  and the beetles were paired up without a choice in selection, the groups wellbeing declined drastically and the beetles were effectively extinct by the 10th generation.

“To be good at out-competing rivals and attracting partners in the struggle to reproduce, an individual has to be good at most things, so sexual selection provides an important and effective filter to maintain and improve population genetic health,” said Gage. “Our findings provide direct support for the idea that sex persists as a dominant mode of reproduction because it allows sexual selection to provide these important genetic benefits.”

This study suggests that in all species, sexual selection plays a key function in sifting out problematic genetic variants, as the competition means females are not willing to select a genetically poor quality mate. The study found that even after 20 generations of in-breeding, the beetles that were strongly focused towards sexual selection had a superior genetic fitness.

How Much Water is Dangerous?

July 22, 2015 by Miss

water

We generally are aware of the guidelines of hydration. What if those rules are incorrect? A new study just released thinks that some of these rules could put you at risk of over-hydration.

Hyponatremia is what happens when the blood becomes very diluted,” says Dr. James Winger, a sports medicine doctor in Chicago. “In the setting of athletics, people take in more fluid than the body can get rid of, usually in the name of preserving hydration.

By drinking too much water, the salt in your body gets diluted, leading to swelling in the cells of the body.

Hyponatremia is more likely in the endurance athlete population. According to Dr Winger, a study looking at ultra-marathoners revealed that almost half of the finishers showed signs of hyponatremia. A further study of Boston Marathoners revealed that thirteen percent had hyponatremia by the time they finished.

Hyponatremia can be tough to diagnose.

Symptoms can be very vague and not unlike symptoms one might experience after running a race or performing any athletic event [including] fatigue, even confusion or exhaustion,

But Dr Winger indicates that it’s completely preventable, as long as you don’t follow some well known myths about hydration.

Old School Wives Tales About Hydration

Myth #1: When you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated.
Thirst is a positive thing. In fact, the study, published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine, indicates athletes only drink when thirsty.

When you feel thirsty, your body has started its water saving techniques. “People think it’s too late; you’re already dehydrated” Winger says, stating that becoming dehydrated is tougher than most people think. Drinking water only when you feel the need, as opposed to forcing yourself to drink at every water station, will keep you adequately hydrated.

Myth #2: Running performance will drop if you’re not completely hydrated.
It’s natural to get somewhat dehydrated during events.

There’s mounting evidence that mild to moderate dehydration has no effect on performance in many sporting endeavors,” Winger notes. “We need to look at dehydration as a natural part of exercise, not necessarily something to prevent.

Most runners can lose up to 3 percent of their bodyweight via dehydration before it affects performance, Winger says. Having a drink when you feel the need will prevent you from the danger zone.

Myth #3: Drink until your urine is clear colored.

In general, urine color is a pretty poor marker of specific or exact urine concentration,” Winger says. “If you’re trying to dilute your urine, you’re probably putting yourself into an overhydrated state.

Myth #4: Cramps are an indicator of dehydration.
If you experience muscle cramps you may think you need water to ease the issue. Recent research suggests muscle cramps don’t have much to do with hydration whatsoever.

What’s been demonstrated is that it has a lot more to do with the fatigued state of the muscle, and muscles that are more fatigued are more likely to cramp,” Winger says. “Fatigued states do occur when you’re dehydrated as well, so there’s a definite overlap that leads down this path. Our advice has been to drink when you’re thirsty — that can be a plan, and it’s the easiest plan there could be,” he says. “When you’re done feeling thirsty, stop drinking. It sounds silly, but that’s the simplicity of it and the beauty behind it. We don’t need any sorts of numbers and measurements and weights to tell us how to stay healthy during exercise.

How to Be Assertive

July 21, 2015 by Miss

When people hear that a person is “assertive,” it’s likely that the first thought is that they are ‘bossy’ or ‘pushy’. However behaving assertively is a positive way to  get what you want as well as determine mutually-advantageous solutions to issues.

The Story:

So I’m am a regular at my local rec center basketball courts as a way to exercise. In the area I play, there are 4 courts specifically for full-court games. Often, I walk in to find a game ongoing, and about 20 other people waiting for a games with their team, despite the fact that there are 3 courts to play on. This is because most people are not assertive enough to begin a match on one of the free courts. As I’m trying to be assertive, I usually organize a game by finding 9 others that are waiting to play. This benefits me and benefits the others, as soon after there’s a line waiting to go on the free court.

This short story notes a few pieces of advice concerning how to become more assertive:

1. Start small

If you’re not accustomed to being assertive, then you won’t find much benefit from taking on your big bank to remove your monthly service fees for your account. Learn to cope with people first , before you begin taking your skills to alter institutional bureaucracy. This way will also help you learn how your position appeals to the personal interests of the individual, which follows to the second point.

2. Exactly how will you getting what you want be beneficial to the other person.

Humans usually act in their own self interest. If you can figure out how to advise a person that what is best for you is also best for them, you will find success. Use human nature in your advantage, and figure out a way to explain how what you want is what the other person(s) want.

3. Always Consistent

The first time you try to implement this, you may fail, and that’s totally fine. However, if you aren’t ongoing in your tries, you’re unlikely to achieve success. Determine why your assertive methods failed and next time change up your approach. Eventually your underlying assertiveness will become the norm, making you more successful person.

Dad Bod – Y or N?

May 22, 2015 by Miss

Not long ago I had no idea whatsoever a  ‘dad bod’ was.  And I learned that the ‘dad bod’ is a new glorification of male physique that screams, “I workout in the gym now and then, but I also drink a lot and like to eat 10 slices of pizza in one sitting.”

It all began with Mackenzie Pearson‘s piece “Why Girls Love The Dad Bod.” The basic concept is a “body characterized by flab and some underlying muscles, usually completed with a beer belly.” That basically means any man that played sport in college then started on pizzas for lunch… and has some vague chance with women into this kind of look.

dadbod

The reasons Pearson gave for her liking of the dad bod were:

It doesn’t intimidate us.

We want to be the cute one.

“Better for cuddling.”

You know what you’re getting.

Fair enough but guys with dad bods will likely gain more weight in the future and possibly even hit the morbidly obese mark.

It’s kind of interesting to see this opinion and see a bunch of women appreciating this reality of life.

The Better Basic Gin and Tonic

February 13, 2015 by Miss

A classic, straightforward (but not cheap) trick to improve the simple Gin and Tonic

gin-and-tonic-feature-1-manmade_large

For a long time, I didn’t like the simple gin and tonic. For some time, I believed it was the gin that I hated, but some smarter friends helped me along with some truly astounding gin-centric cocktails, and I moved away from the basic vodka toward the appreciation of gin’s truly unique aromatic elements. At that stage I determined I just didn’t want standard tonic water.

The results of this in-depth alcoholic investigation? Firstly, I like gin. Secondly, I really like tonic. And lastly, I appreciate them together…a lot. So what was the issue with all those early G & T’s that scared me away?

gin-and-tonic-tonic-2

It wasn’t the gin, but surprisingly…the brand of tonic. The standard sicky sweet  Schweppes tonic simply doesn’t do it for me. It’s way too sweet, really close to lemonade.

Basically – if you want to immediately improve your gin and tonic, spend a few dollars more and get yourself some superior tonic water. At the minimum, sample some different bottles to figure out which you like more, rather than buying whatever you get the store. Some good tonics to look out for:  Fever Tree and QTonic. Or if you have the time and inclination, make your own tonic syrup and mix it with soda.

Make Your Own Tonic Water

The point being, don’t skimp on the tonic.

gin-and-tonic-3

Or buy store bought and cut the tonic with unflavored soda water.

Best Summer-time Gin & Tonic:

  • 2 oz. London dry gin
  • 2 oz. Fever Tree Mediterranean-style tonic water
  • 2 oz. club soda
  • 2 dashes Fee Brothers orange bitters
  • Garnish: lime wedge or cucumber slice
